I wanted the top of the workbench to overhang the frame by 2 inches on every side to allow for easily clamping things to the top of the bench. Since the top is 80 by 36 inches, the two rectangular frames needed to be 76 by 32 inches. Cut an additional two pieces at 29 inches long to be used as stretchers across the middle of each rectangle. Predrilling the holes for the screws will help prevent splitting the wood.

Cut eight pieces of 2X4 at 32 inches long for the legs. Screw two of the leg pieces together in an "L" shape to make one leg. Repeat three more times. The finished height of the bench with 32 inch legs will be approximately 34 inches after the top is attached.

If a different finished height is desired, the length of the legs can be modified to suit your particular application. Attach the legs to the two rectangular frames as shown in the photos. One frame should be screwed on 8 inches up from the bottom.

The other should be screwed on flush with the top of the legs. The purpose of the lower frame is to strengthen the structure and prevent the legs from spreading, but it can also be covered with plywood to be used as a storage shelf to maximize storage space in your workshop.

The easiest way to attach the door top to the frame is to lay the door on the floor, and then set the frame on top of it upside down. Make sure the side of the door you want to be up is down against the floor. Make sure the frame is centred on the door and there is a 2 inch overhang all around as shown in the photos. Use the six angle brackets to attach the top to the frame.

The workbench is now nearly complete and very heavy. Stand the workbench upright. The help of a friend my be required to get it upright. Optional Attach plywood to the lower frame to make a storage shelf. Optional A power strip can be attached to the frame of the workbench to allow for easily plugging in power tools. Optional The top of the workbench can be finished with polyurethane to protect the wood, or covered with a sacrificial sheet of thin plywood to protect it from damage during heavy use.

Optional A heavy duty bench vise can be screwed to the top of the bench, and is a very useful addition to the workbench. The workbench should give many years of good service in your workshop. If the top of the workbench becomes badly damaged or worn after several years of heavy use, the top can be detached and flipped over.

That will allow for at least several more years of use. It must just me being thick as no-one else has mentioned it, but why does it say cut the side pieces 29" not 32" as shown in the picture and why are the central strut pieces 29" not 30" 32" minus 2"? I'm obviously not seeing something and have gone over it several times. I haven't started it yet as I don't want to cut the wrong lengths. Reply 1 year ago.

Question 1 year ago on Introduction. I'm about to build this and I have a question about mounting the vise. There does not seem to be enough overhang on the edges to mount a vise on the corner. I would like to avoid drilling through the 2x4s. Where would you recommend mounting the vise?

I saw this post and I thought, yes I can do that! I decided to use 2x6 boards for the top, and I am going to rosin the top of it. I really believe your pictures showed everything to make this a great project. Just made this yesterday with the help of my yr-old dad. The instructions were easy to follow. From lumber to workbench in 2 hours! I adjusted the height to be compatible with my table saw so it can be used for outfeed is that a word?

It's very sturdy and ready for the many projects to come! Thanks mdavis19 for the really helpful tutorial and video. I have made my own based mainly on yours, although I ended up putting the legs inside the frame rather than outside. Im pleased with the end result. Its dead level on the top all round, even with the legs not all being totally straight! Question 3 years ago on Introduction. I have a question. Is there any special consideration for using 2x4's for the legs of the bench over perhaps, 4x4's?

Some ideas. Do NOT use drywall screws. Use deck screws instead. They're available at HD or Lowes. You can even get stainless ones if you'd like. I'd also think about using 4 x 6 posts for the corners rather than 2 x 4s, and I'd consider gluing the wooden pieces together for additional strength.

I am so excited! I am a 73 year old woodworking granny. I just completed my first project--your workbench. It had a couple of dings on the edge but otherwise was fine. I made it all by myself except my hubby insisted helping me attach the legs and the top. It took me most of one day to make it. I think I viewed your tutorial at least 10 times.

Now I am ready to move onto some small projects like bird houses. Measure twicecut once. Thanks again. I am a rookie in wood working just needing the right direction. Thanks for the instructions. Just finished with a coat of deck stain and polyurethane. Added some wheels as an added touch to move around the garage as needed. Since drywall screws have lousy shear strength, I'd just suggest deck screws instead.

Otherwise great plans! Reply 5 years ago. Some sound advice yet again. I did in fact listen and read at the same time and I was surprised at how few instances there was any difference at all. The only changes I noticed also made matters even clearer and often only the odd word change. As an aside for those struggling with your speed of delivery it would be very useful to follow the text as they listen as it aids understanding.

Overall a great effort all round. I am really starting to like this workbench. Also looks like a affordable workbench solution for a small school with limited resources…. It certainly is a very affordable bench, and also quick to build, which again I would imagine to be useful for a small school. Cheers, Richard.

I plan on working with my hand tools a lot more, just not with this bench. I want this to be a perfect as I can get it. Please keep the great content coming. Oh, and my wife love the spoon rack. And yes, it was done with power tools. It was just a thought. I am waiting for the next installment and what projects you have lined for the future.

My best wishes to both of you. Thank You for sharing your wisdom and knowledge. Marty — the important thing is being in the workshop and if you are enjoying it then that is what matters most. But I suspect your hand tool work is probably better than you give yourself credit for. More practise will certainly help so it would be a good idea to try out your skills with one of the techniques demonstrated by Richard on just a scrap piece of wood and see how you get on.

Keep doing it on offcuts until you have mastered it. Due to a remodel, I was left without power in my shop for several months. It forced me to get good at hand sawing and planing. You might just give it a try on the real thing. The best trick I was ever shown in sawing was to maintain the polish on the blade. If you use an old second hand handsaw, then fine steel wool and grit paper are a boon.

Polish the blade until you can get a good clear reflection of the edge of the board you are cutting. Position the saw where you want the cut and lean the saw plate left or right until the reflected line of the edge appears to run straight through the blade. Guaranteed perpendicular, then start a little slow and careful to establish the vertical line of the cut.

On the trade-off topic, any comments about the benchtop bouncing or being extra-loud whilst doing heavy impact work? Hi John, Very good question. In terms of flex, absolutely none, due to the bearers that are under that top. Another refreshing blast of change — this time on the whole bench topic. Also a slab top would give a bench greater stiffness so on this the base structure will need to be stiffer I imagine? Having just made a beech knock-down as a small simple bench, what are your issues with knock-downs?

Hi Douglas, Many thanks for joining I really doubt that you needed to. But on a bench like this we are relying heavily on those deep aprons to add stiffness, and of course support bearers underneath the top to get rid of any bounce. Although sometimes, like yours, the knock down challenge can add something very interesting to the build. I do have a Frenchy coming up very soon with an interesting knockdown construction. Good question.

Thanks for this question and response. I was wondering as well. I can also get redwood in similar dimensions, but am wondering about the longevity of such a soft wood. Much appreciated. You might give Edensaw Woods a call to see what they can do or suggest. He specializes in large dimension softwoods such as slabs and timber framing materials. If you talk with him he might have other suggestions. You live where it should be easy to find such material, but it can take some effort to dig it out.

Good luck! Thanks for getting back to me so quickly with this information. Have a great weekend! Hi Richard. You make an excellent point about attaching the top: nails from above are actually safer than screws from below. What would you think of attaching the top with wooden pegs?

Hi Dan, Thanks for your very kind words. Angling the pegs is also a great idea. Of course making proper tapered pegs as well would be a must. Not that anyone reading this would do this but I offer a word of caution about the nails. I think you can all guess what happened next.

Zoom application download play store Thanks for the tip Chris. This is a convenient option because they can cut it to your exact specifications, you can inspect the wood before purchase to ensure you are getting the most attractive pieces, and some stores will even deliver it to your doorstep. I'm the guy behind Woodwork Hubby! For fragile crafts, a scrap piece of carpet can be stapled to the top. So NYAH! There is no way you can anticipate everything you will require from a workbench. If you need more than one surface, such as a soft side and a hard surface, cover half the surface with carpet and the other with hardboard, glued and stapled to provide a nice, smooth work surface.

There are pros and cons for each, but ultimately it is going to come down to what kinds of projects you intend to use it for in the long run. Maybe if it had taken me a few weeks to drill all those holes and mount a few vises I would only have one vise and 8 holes too. When it comes down to it, this is a very personal decision. Well, if money is no object, you can certainly find the right bench. I had no idea they were called a wagon vise back then.
